The Season of Still Growth

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.”

— Rainer Maria Rilke

Not all growth looks like movement. Some seasons of life are quiet, still, and inward. On the surface, nothing seems to change, yet beneath the stillness, deep transformation is taking place. These are the seasons of still growth, the moments when life asks us to pause, listen, and trust that becoming continues even when it cannot be seen.

Modern life praises progress we can measure. We celebrate milestones, achievements, and motion. But the most meaningful growth often happens in silence. Just as winter roots prepare the ground for spring, periods of stillness prepare the soul for renewal. Still growth is patient work. It shapes resilience, clarity, and peace.

The mind can struggle with stillness. We are taught to equate stillness with stagnation, yet they are not the same. Stagnation is avoidance. Stillness is presence. It is choosing to stay with what is, to breathe through uncertainty rather than rush to escape it. Growth continues quietly in the background when we learn to be fully present in the moment.

Psychologists who study personal development describe these periods as “incubation phases,” times when ideas, emotions, and insights are processing beneath awareness. It is the same natural rhythm seen in creativity, healing, and even nature. A field must lie fallow before it can produce again. The pause is not wasted time. It is preparation.

Spiritual teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh wrote, “When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you do not blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. Perhaps it needs more water or less sun.” Still growth invites the same compassion toward ourselves. Instead of judgment, we practice care. We tend gently to what needs nurturing and allow time to do the rest.

To embrace this season, begin by allowing yourself to slow down. Create moments of quiet each day without the need to fill them. Sit, breathe, or take a slow walk. Write in your Happy U Journal about what feels unclear or incomplete, not to solve it, but to honor it. Reflection turns rest into insight and stillness into understanding.

Still growth also teaches trust. When we cannot see change, we must believe in the process. Like roots growing underground, transformation is often invisible until it breaks through. The patience we cultivate in stillness becomes the strength we draw from later.

There is beauty in these quiet seasons. They remind us that we are not machines built for constant output but living beings who grow in cycles. Each pause is part of the rhythm of becoming. When we stop trying to hurry growth, peace arrives.

At Happy U, we believe stillness is an essential part of transformation.
